The Big Spring:

The Big Spring is the second largest limestone spring in the South, producing an average of four million gallons of water per day and providing water to 10,000 people in Northwest Georgia. It also was the site of a ball field and ceremonial dance ground of the Cherokee Indian natives until the early 1800s.Big Spring Park, located on Wissihickon Avenue, is registered on the Trail of Tears National Historic Trails Association. The land surrounding the park served as Cedar Town Camp during the 1830 Indian Removal Act.On April 19, 2011, hundreds of people gathered for the unveiling of exhibits about Cedar Town Camp and the official designation of the Big Spring's placement on the Trail of Tears. 

 

 

Downtown Cedartown:

Both sides of downtown Cedartown are wrapped in late 19th and early 20th century grandiose displays of masonry and architectural detail. When compared to historical photos, our modern-day streetscape looks wonderfully preserved. Here, you will find delicious places to eat and unique places to shop, as well as two parks with wooden swings and benches to rest your feet and "sit a spell."When you walk downtown, don't forget to look up at the buildings' intricate facades and make sure to stop by the Cedartown Welcome Center at 609 S. The Historic West Cinema:

The West Theatre opened in August of 1941 by LAM Amusement Co.. The opening attraction was “Three Sons O'Guinn”. Designed by the GA architectural firm Tucker & Howell, it featured a relief sculpture by Julian Hoke Harris. When the West Theatre opened it was the largest theatre operated by LAM.Considered one of the finest examples of Art Deco style in Northwest Georgia, it features hanging chandeliers in the lobby and movie cards from the 1950’s and 1960’s adorn the walls. It is still in operation today. It is located at 112 West Avenue.

Polk County Historical Museum:

This museum contains an abundance of Polk County’s history. It includes a spacious showroom with three themed side rooms, including an informative Sterling Holloway exhibit. It is located at 117 West Avenue.

Sterling Holloway "Voice of Winnie the Pooh" Birthplace:

Sterling Price Holloway, Jr. (Jan. 4, 1905 - Nov. 22, 1992) was an American voice actor. Most notably he was the original voice of Winnie the Pooh. He also filled as the voice for Jiminy Cricket in 1973.Holloway was also a movie and stage actor and appeared in movies such as Meet John Doe (1941) and It's A Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World(1963). He also appeared in a few Gene Autry movies and he also appeared in television such as The Andy Griffith Show, Family Affair, and Gilligan's Island. Holloway was awarded the Disney Legend of 1991 in 1991 where he was escorted by the character of Pooh himself up to receive the award. Sterling Holloway died on November 22, 1992 at the age of 87 from a cardiac arrest. A Georgia Historic Marker, located at 301 S. College Street, proudly pays tribute to the birth site of one of Cedartown's most famous citizens, the beloved actor, Sterling Holloway. The character behind the quickly recognized Winnie the Pooh voice began his early childhood years right here with his 'neighborhood variety shows' and from there went on to become a highly acclaimed American 'Star'.

Peek Park:

Peek Park, a beautiful area located in the heart of Cedartown, was built on land donated by Captain J.A. Peek. It is located on North College Street in Cedartown. It features tennis courts, picnic areas and a $250,000 state-of-the-art playground, fully funded and constructed by local citizens and volunteers. In the summer, a dancing fountain provides a place to cool of for local children and families.The pavilion, located at Peek Park, is a popular area for family gatherings and birthday parties. Camp-style cook out grills are also located near the pavilion.Peek Park is home to the annual Cedar Valley Arts Festival that takes place in the springtime, and also serves as a main gathering point for the world-famous Cedartown 5K Wheelchair Race.

St. James Episcopal Church:

Built at 302 West Avenue in 1883, this is the oldest church still in use in Cedartown. The church has been preserved in its original state, with the exception of the exterior paint color. Sterling Holloway, the voice of Winnie-the-Pooh, grew up in this church.The parish community formed in 1878 with a small group of Episcopalians meeting in homes and then commercial properties. The desire for a permanent place to worship was realized when construction of the current building was begun in 1883 and completed in 1884. The interior of the building was carefully furnished with appropriate pews and a hand-carved altar rail. In July of 2013, St. James celebrated 135 years of continuous worship in the Anglican/Episcopal style and tradition.
